'OLD LAGS, NEW HORIZONS'

"I can read the effing words; I can read the effing words' - As he said
that, a prisoner wept with joy and relief as he had finally discovered that
he could read!

Jonathan Aitken told this story when he spoke at St Paul's, Covent Garden on
19th November in support of the Trust. Over a hundred people heard Jonathan
say that before he went to prison he had no idea many people in prison were
unable to read or write, to deal with simple correspondence. Around
one-third of prisoners were illiterate. While the Prison Education
concentrated on with basic skills, education for those who were above this
level relied largely on charitable trusts.

Three former prisoners Jonathan Aitken met whilst in prison joined him to
talk about their experience of getting education in prison. One who had
studied Spanish said that not only had he achieved a good level of spoken
Spanish, the discipline of learning and what study involved had been
enormously useful when he was assisting his teenage children with their
studies.

A longer report of this meeting will be posted shortly.
